Working over the lid of your box of chosen coloured sand, put your empty funnel into the top of your shaped bottle. Add a scoop of coloured sand to your funnel. Use your funnel to fill your bottle with coloured sand. If you allow the funnel to remain upright you will get a flat line of colour, which can be levelled by gently tapping the bottom of the bottle on the table. This will also help the sand to settle. See diagram 1.
To achieve a wavy stripe, move your funnel around the inside of the bottle to form mounds of sand. See diagram 2.
With some shapes (e.g. the bird), you can fill areas of colour almost separately by carefully tipping your bottle without disturbing your previous layer of sand. See diagram 3.
When your bottle is full, tap it gently on the table to settle the sand. Allow it to stand for some minutes and tap again. When the sand has settled, fill the space at the top of the bottle so that the cap fits tightly.
This activity should be carried out whilst seated and under supervision.
